AusTender
Definition: The Australian Government's central procurement information system, managed by the Department of Finance, where Commonwealth agencies publish tender opportunities, contract awards, and other procurement notices.
What is AusTender?
AusTender (tenders.gov.au) is the official online procurement portal for the Australian Commonwealth Government. Operated by the Department of Finance since 2004, it is the central platform where every Commonwealth agency must publish tender opportunities, report contract awards, and provide public access to procurement information.
Is AusTender free?
Yes, completely. Registration is free, searching is free, downloading tender documents is free, and submitting responses is free. There is no subscription, premium tier, or per-bid fee. To register you need an ABN and about 15 minutes; once registered you have full access to everything on the platform.
The scale behind that free access is substantial: in 2024-25 the Commonwealth reported more than $80 billion in contract value through AusTender.
What is published on AusTender?
- Open approaches to market - open tenders, RFTs, RFPs, RFQs and EOIs from Commonwealth agencies
- Contract notices - details of contracts awarded at $10,000 or above, reported within 42 days, including supplier name, value and duration
- Standing offers - Standing Offer Arrangements and Panel Arrangements
- Multi-use lists - pre-qualified supplier lists agencies can draw from
- Planned procurements - forward procurement plans that give the market advance notice
What AusTender does not cover
AusTender is federal only. It does not include state or territory government tenders (each state runs its own portal), local council tenders (Australia has hundreds of councils publishing separately), some government-owned corporations, or classified Defence procurement. State and local procurement together equals or exceeds federal spending, so a federal-only view misses most of the total market.
AusTender email notifications and their limits
AusTender offers free email alerts based on UNSPSC category codes. They are useful but blunt: category-based only, with no keyword, location or value filtering, no relevance scoring, and federal coverage only. Broad categories mean many irrelevant notifications; narrow ones risk missing borderline-relevant tenders.
Tips for tenderers
- Register and set alerts even if you use other tools; response windows can be tight.
- Check planned procurements to see opportunities before they are formally published.
- Study contract notices - who wins in your category, and at what value, is free competitive intelligence.
- Use the advanced search to filter by category, agency, value range and date.
- Read the Commonwealth Procurement Rules - understanding the CPRs improves how you structure responses.
AusTender and Australia Tender Alerts
AusTender is the authoritative source for federal opportunities, and federal government tenders are only part of the picture. Australia Tender Alerts monitors the major Australian government tender sources and uses AI to match opportunities to your business, so federal, state and council opportunities reach you in one alert. See how tender alert software complements the portals themselves.
